Breakenridge: I would vote for John McCain
Rob Breakenridge would cast a ballot for John McCain--if he had to

A very difficult decision confronts Americans on Nov. 4, and I don't envy the American voter. I am presuming that Barack Obama will emerge as the next U.S. president, but I'm really at a loss to venture a guess as to what sort of president he will be. Some conservatives and libertarians have embraced Obama, but that seems based more on a hope of what sort of president he might be, not based on the past and present Barack Obama.
As an outsider looking in, I'm more free to pick and choose the issues to care about, and I think that creates a skewed perspective when it comes to judging the candidates. As a pro-American Canadian, I think a Barack Obama presidency would go a long way in tempering the anti-Americanism that has run amok in recent years. That said, an Obama presidency could mean trouble for free trade and that would be bad news for Canada.
If the economy were the prevailing issue for me, I'd seriously consider voting for Bob Barr and the Libertarian ticket. However, I think foreign policy remains paramount, and the need for continued American leadership and determination in countering the global threat of Islamic radicalism. The Libertarians clearly want no part of that, and the jury is out on Barack Obama. John McCain may be a lot of things, but on this issue he gets it.
If I had to vote, I'd cast a vote for John McCain.
