Aaron Lee Wudrick: I'm pleading the fifth

Blogger Aaron Lee Wudrick won't exactly say who he would vote for, if he could vote in the US presidential election.

Aaron Lee Wudrick - November 3, 2008

I am fairly indifferent about the U.S. election. As a libertarian-minded person, neither candidate excites me. I do admire John McCain's military service and think his sacrifices for his country are commendable. I think Barack Obama, his policies notwithstanding, would be a social watershed in America by proving a black man really can be elected president.

I supported George Bush in 2004 almost solely because I preferred his consistency on foreign policy to the flip flops of his opponent. But he betrayed small-government conservatives and libertarians who supported him by expanding government at a rate that would make many socialists blush. So I think the GOP needs some time in the penalty box to find their way again. America can survive four years of mediocrity.

On the other hand, if there's one Republican I could get behind for president this time around, it's John McCain...

Finally, I simply do not believe that Barack Obama will be as much of a leftist as president as his record might suggest. Though I may disagree with his views on some things, I think he's a very intelligent person who understands realpolitik, and is genuine in his efforts to reach across partisan lines. He'll hardly be a hero to libertarians but I don't think he'll be public enemy number one either.

I can't say I'd personally cast a vote for Obama. I can say I wouldn't cry if he won. That's the best you're gonna get from me!

As for Bob Barr -- his track record suggests that the depth of his commitment to libertarianism is shaky. And I don't do fringe candidates, in any event.
